AB Architecture was founded in 1991 as a sole-proprietor firm specializing in preservation and restoration of historic structures. For the previous fourteen years, Allen Brooks’ background in other architectural firms was virtually always focused on projects of an historical nature. Within these twenty-four years his professional experience has earned him credentials and a reputation as a leader in regional historic preservation.

Aligned with his professional endeavors, he has been active in historic preservation community affairs that have broadened his experiences and civic responsibility.  As a two-term former Charlotte Mecklenburg Historic Landmarks Commissioner and a current two-term Charlotte Historic District Commissioner, he has a thorough working knowledge of the matters dealing with Historic Certifications and interpreting “The Secretary of the Interiors Guidelines for Historic Rehabilitation”.  This is an important qualification enabling clients to receive Tax Credit certification from both the federal National Park Service and the state of North Carolina Division of Archives and History approvals, as well as numerous projects with local Certificates of Appropriateness necessary for approval and obtaining building permits.

On a personal level he embraced the essence of his profession to “practice what I preach” for my own home and office. This house-moving preservation-restoration additions project over the course of one year involved all the aspects of local historic designation and state tax credit certification.  In the spring of 2002 the HGTV network featured the restoration in the television series “Restore America”.

Although his practice focuses on preservation and renovation, full architectural services extend from commercial, institutional and residential projects of adaptive-use and new construction. Good design with devotion to context and sustainability has the capability and flexibility to be relevant for the ages.
